John’s eyes flutter closed as what he’s only dreamed of happening happens. Alexander’s lips connect with his. John has a sharp intake of breath as the feeling of the kiss engulfs him. It’s better than anything he’s ever imagined. Alex’s lips are smooth yet rough at the same time as he gently kisses John. And he kisses back.
He slowly reaches a hand up and cups John’s face. He had never even dreamed of this moment, but now that it’s happening, he feels all of his hidden emotions resurfacing.
John pulls away slightly and whispers, “You have no idea how long I’ve waited for this.”
Alex opens his eyes slightly and asks, “Is it everything you hoped for?”
“Better,” John replies, kissing him again. He wraps his hands around his neck and pulls him closer.
“Are we a thing?” Alex murmurs.
John pulls back a bit and opens his eyes. “I… I don’t know. I want to be… maybe we can see how school goes tomorrow?”
Alex nods. “That’s probably a good idea. And, we agree that Laff and Herc don’t know about this, right?”
“Yeah,” John agrees.
“But what do we tell them?”
John shrugs. “That we wanna see how everything plays out, and that we don’t know what’s gonna happen.”
“Okay. How much you wanna bet that they’re standing right outside the door?” Alex asks quietly.
John flings open the door, and both of them tumble into the room on top of each other, since they were leaning against the door.
“Knew it,” Alex murmurs.
John crosses his arms and asks, “How long have you two been there? And what did you hear?”
They both get up and Laff says, “We were there the whole time.”
“We couldn’t hear much, though. Just heard a few things about drawings, and that’s about it,” Herc replies.
“So… did you decide anything? Talk about anything important? Do anything important?” Lafayette asks, wanting all of the details.
Knowing John is a terrible liar, Alex replies, “We want to see how school goes tomorrow before he decide anything.”
“But what is there to decide?” Hercules asks.
John and Alex are saved by Mrs. Laurens calling, “Dinner!”
“Let’s go eat!” John exclaims, and they all head downstairs.
John is in absolute heaven. Not just because the food is great, but because his seemingly-lifelong crush not only feels the same way, but actually kissed him.
He would let himself drown in these thoughts, but people keep talking to him. Which starts to get annoying, despite the fact that they are nice questions.
“So, did you enjoy walking around the streets of New York?” his mom asks.
“Yeah, it was pretty cool,” John replies.
“Did anyone recognize you from the AMBER Alert?” Herc asks.
“If they did they didn’t talk to me,” he answers, beginning to get slightly annoyed.
“Did you ever think of coming back?” Laff questions.
“More or less,” John murmurs, taking a huge bite of his hamburger to try and avoid another question.
“What would you have done once you ran out of money?” his dad challenges.
John stands up suddenly and slams his hands on the table, making nearly everyone jump. “Why the heck do you guys want to know so much information? I ran away, Alex found me, I came back. End of story.” He then stomps up the stairs to his room.
He’s not even half way up when he begins to feel guilty. He turns around slowly and says, “Sorry, I’m just tired. I’ll see you guys in the morning.”
“We better see you,” Alex murmurs.
John walks up the stairs and into his room. He gets his pajamas on before laying down in bed, thinking about the events of the day. Was Alex telling the truth when he said he liked me back? Did he only kiss me in the heat of the moment? What if Eliza forgives him tomorrow, and he suddenly gets back together with her and I am forgotten? What if what if what if.
John rubs his eyes and convinces himself to go to sleep, where many dreams await him.
Everyone is silent while eating after John’s outburst. Alex finishes first, and he takes care of his and John’s plates. Half an hour later, he leaves with Herc and his parents to go to their house.
He lays in bed, thinking. I actually kissed him. I ACTUALLY kissed John Laurens. But I can’t date him yet. I have to talk to Eliza first. Then maybe… I dunno.
The next morning, Alex approaches Eliza at her locker, ignoring the snickers and snide remarks people are throwing at him. “Eliza? Can I talk to you for a moment?” She glances at him blankly, and turns her attention back to her locker. “Look, if you think I’m going to make some lame excuse, then know that’s not what I’m about to say.”
She glances at him again, this time interested. “Go on…” she says in a monotonous voice.
“Look, I’m sorry about what happened and everything, but that’s not what I want to talk about.” He sighs and lowers his voice. “Look, Friday afternoon, John told me… that he liked me. And that he had for a while. And the thing is… I kind of liked him back. And I sort of have since I met him, but I was in denial.” Eliza’s eyes widen as the weight of the words sink in. “That doesn’t mean I never didn’t like you, though! I’m bi, and I did have feelings for you. But with Maria… I think I felt like I was missing something, some affection, and I thought that might be it. But I guess not. Now, that doesn’t justify what I did. But… I wanted to know… your opinion. If you wouldn’t feel awkward if I started going out with John.”
Eliza is silent for a moment, thinking things over. Finally, she says, “Alex, you really hurt me. And I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to fully forgive you. But… I understand. Completely. I’ll… I’ll support you, I guess.” She gives him a weak smile.
Alex returns the smile and says, “Um, one more thing: could you tell Angelica and Peggy not to kill me? Please?”
She sighs. “Okay, fine. But I can’t stop them from glaring at you.”
His smile brightens. “Thanks Eliza.” he then walks off.
While Alex was talking to Eliza, John was having a conversation with Peggy.
“Hey Peggy, and I tell you something?” he asks while rummaging through his locker.
“Um, sure,” she replies. “But if you’re going to tell me to not kill Alex, then save it.”
“Well, I might, but that’s not the main point. Um… well, you see… I’m gay. And I like Alex.”
She gives him a look and says sarcastically, “No, really? I mean, it’s not like you had goo-goo eyes for him for all long as I’ve known you or anything.”
Jon laughs. “You see, I was being obvious! But he was oblivious. Anyway, um… on Friday, I sort of let it slip that I liked him. And that’s part of why I ran away, because I was afraid of what he’d say, and what my homophobic father would say. Well, Alex found me, and we talked. And then I got home, and we talked more. Then I showed him some of my drawings, the ones about my fantasies with him. And then…” He takes a deep breath.
“I haven’t told anyone this, and you have to promise not to tell anyone. And don’t tell Alex I told you. But um… he uh…” He lowers his voice. “He kissed me.”
Peggy squeals really loud and starts bouncing up and down, making everyone stare. With a voice charged with excitement, she whisper-screams, “What!? Are you guys a thing now?”
John shrugs. “Alex wanted to see how today goes. I think he wanted to talk to Eliza about something first? I honestly don’t know.”
And innocent smile on her face, Peggy growls, “If he gets back together with her and abandons you, he’s dead.”
Just then, Alex walks over. “Quick, act natural!” John hisses. Peggy turns to get something out of her locker. “Hey Alex,” he says, a little nervous.
“Hey,” is all he can get out before the first bell rings. They rush off to class.
While Mr. Washington is giving a lecture, John leans over to Alex and whispers, “What did you two talk about?”
Peggy eavesdrops, which is easy since she sits right next to Alex.
“Oh, um, uh, nothing important, hehe, but, um, I think that uh, we’re cool now? But uh, you know, eh, uh, let’s listen to Mr. Washington?” Alex says nervously, thinking of what he has planned for after school.
John raises an eyebrows, but decides to pay attention to Washington.
At the end of the day, they head over to Lafayette’s house. Alex is giddy, but he tries to hide it as much as possible. Which of course means his friends can see right through it.
“Why so excited mon ami?” Laff asks.
Alex looks up at him as if awoken from a dream. “Hm? What do you mean?” he asks innocently.
“Don’t play dube, Alex,” Herc scolds. “What’s up?”
They walk into Laff’s room, and Alex sits down. “Nothing. Nothing’s up?” He tries his best not to look at John.
John raises an eyebrow and sits down in Laff’s desk chair. He can tell something is up, and he has a feeling it’s about him, but he’s not sure. “Come on Alex, tell us!” he says, lightly punching him in the arm.
Alex takes a deep breath and takes John’s hand. Laff gasps, grabs Herc by the arm, and whispers, “Are you seeing what I’m seeing?” Herc just nods, a little stunned.
Smiling, Alex looks into John’s eyes. “John… will you be my boyfriend?”
John gasps and puts his empty hand over his mouth. Laff screeches, and Herc gasps. A wide grin on his face, John answers with a kiss.
“OH MON DIEU!!!” Laff shouts.
“WHAT!?” Herc shouts.
Ignoring them, John pulls away and whispers, “Of course I will.”
Alex knew he would say yes, but that still didn’t calm his worries.
“WHAT DID WE MISS?!” Laff asks, nearly falling off of the bed. That’s when John and Alex realize their friends are here.
“Um… talking. Lots of talking,” Alex says, glancing over at John.
“And he kissed me yesterday!” John adds, smiling like a maniac.
This time, Laff actually falls off the bed, and Herc shouts, “WHAT!?”
“Jeez, you guys are loud,” Alex murmurs.
“IT’S OFFICIAL!” Lafayette shouts. “HERC, IT’S OFFICIAL! LAMS IS A THING!”
“LAMS FOR LIFE!” Hercules adds.
“Um, what’s Lams?” John asks.
“It’s your ship name!” Laff responds. “I came up with it myself. It’s Laurens and Hamilton mixed together!”
“Huh,” Alex replies. “So would that mean that you two are… Mullette?”
“Mullette…” Herc repeats. “I like it.”
“Me too!” Laff exclaims.
Lafayette’s mom knocks on the open door and asks, “Are you all okay?”
“Yes mom, just excited. John and Alex are dating!” he replies.
“Just checking,” she says before leaving.
Alex turns to John and asks, “Where would you want to go for our first date?”
John thinks about it for a moment. “I dunno, maybe… ice skating? Or roller skating, whichever. Or possibly an at-home movie, sledding…”
“I like the idea of sledding,” Alex suggests. “Maybe we could do that Saturday?”
John takes his hand and replies, “It’s a date.”
“Now… kiss!” Laff says.
They both glare at him playfully.
It’s Saturday, and Alexander and John are standing at the bottom of Redhurst Hill, the best hill for sledding in their area. “Ya know, I’m surprised not many people are here,” Alex remarks.
“Hey, that’s better for us,” John replies brightly.
Alex takes his hand and says, “Now come on, let’s go!” They make their way to the top, where they have a nice view of the surrounding area. In a mock accent, Alex tells John, “After you, my good sir.”
John gets into the front of the sled and giggles, “You’re such a dork.”
“Yeah, but I’m your dork,” he replies, getting into the sled behind John, who giggles. “You ready?” John nods, and Alex pushes off.
They speed down the hill, laughing the whole way. They slow to a stop, and then go right back up the hill to do it again.
On about their fifteenth time, they hit an unseen rock on their way down, which makes both of them fall out of the sled. They go tumbling, and the sky is the ground and the ground is the sky. In the span of five seconds, the following happens: John lets out a shriek, and Alex tries to stop himself. He manages to stop spinning, but then John crashes into him and they tumble a little further. They finally stop near the bottom, John on top of Alex.
John groans and murmurs, “That hurt.”
“Agreed,” Alex replies. He looks at John and adds, “You’re bleeding.”
John feels his face and finds a trail of blood coming from the corner of his left eyebrow. He rolls off of Alex and sits up. “You don’t happen to have bandaids, do you?” he asks, applying pressure to the wound.
Alexander sits up and rummages through his pockets and replies, “Actually, I do. I brought a couple just in case something like this happened.” He pulls one out, and also a small wipe. “This might sting,” he warns before gently beginning to wipe away the blood. John winces slightly, but lets Alex lean him up.
He unwraps the bandage and gently places it on John’s wound. He then says, “All better. Does it hurt anywhere else?”
“My neck kinda hurts, and I might have a few bruises. You?”
“Eh, probably a few bruises too.”
John shivers and murmurs, “Now I got snow in my clothes.”
“It was bound to happen,” Alex replies, standing up. “You wanna keep sledding?” he asks, helping John up.
“If you want to. Or we can get into warm pajamas and watch a movie,” he suggests.
“I like that idea. Come on, let’s go.” They start walking. At some point, Alex says, “Wait, that means I have to go back to Herc’s house to get my pajamas.”
John waves it off and, blushing slightly, he replies, “Just use some of mine. We’re practically the same size, anyway.”
“Yeah, but I’m taller,” Alex teases.
John shoves him playfully and laughs, “Whatever.”
Alex puts and arm around him and adds, “Oh come on, you know you love me.”
John smiles and loops his arm around Alexander’s waist. “Yeah, I do.”
They walk upstairs and into John’s room. Alex exclaims, “I claim your turtle onesie!”
John is about to object, but then he says, “You know what, fine. Just for today, though.” Alex smiles and heads to the bathroom to change. John puts on some of his other turtle pajamas.
When he opens the door, Alex is standing there in John’s onesie and he says quietly, “I never knew something could be this comfy!”
His boyfriend laughs and says, “Come on, let’s go find something to watch. What do you want?”
“Hmmm… oh, how about Harry Potter!” Alex exclaims.
“Oh my gosh, YES! Which one?”
“First. Definitely. But first, we need popcorn.” They head downstairs and get the whole 22 oz bag of Nearly Naked Popcorn. They might not eat the whole thing, but you never know.
They head back upstairs and snuggle together on the couch. Alex turns on the TV, and John rests his head on his boyfriend’s shoulder. “I’m glad we’re a thing,” he murmurs.
“Me too,” Alex replies just as the movie starts.
Thankfully, no one interrupts them, and they just sit there eating popcorn and cuddling for about two and a half hours.
The movie ends, and by then it’s about three or four in the afternoon. “I don’t wanna movie,” John murmurs, his eyes half closed.
Alex kisses his forehead and replies, “Then you don’t have to. We’ll just sit here for all eternity.”
Eternity meaning one hour.
They finally get up, and Alexander changes into his clothes (they threw them into the dryer to dry) and heads back to Herc’s house. It was a good first date.
It’s the last day of January when the signs get put up.
What signs? The ones that announce the Valentine’s Day dance, which is a fancy way to say homecoming has arrived. Prom won’t be until May, but sadly, only juniors and seniors can for to that. But, everyone is invited to the Valentine’s Day dance.
Which is creating lots of buzz around school about who is going to ask who. And subconsciously, Alex wonders if Eliza will have a date, or if she’ll just go with her sisters. Or maybe not at all. He’s slowly healing his relationship with her, but it’s going really slow. She doesn’t even say hi to him in the hallways yet.
Eliza has erased Alexander from her mind. She’s just pretending that he’s a boy she knows from class, and nothing more. And, to be honest, she kind of likes being single. She feels… free.
But the same can’t be said for Angelica. There’s this one guy named Evan Hansen that she has been crushing on for about a month or two, and she’s hoping he’ll go to the dance with her. She kind of wants him to ask her, but it’s 2019, she can ask him if she wants to. But still, TRADITION.
Burr has already asked Theodosia, and of course she said yes. Peggy has been asked by Charles Lee (he’s asking almost every girl in school) and of course she said no. She also slapped him in the face.
A few days after the sign appears, Laff takes Herc on a date, and that’s when he asks him to go to the dance with him. Hercules obviously said yes.
It’s around one in the morning on February 5th when John calls Lafayette. Just as he expected, he picks up right away. In a tired voice, he asks, “Mon ami, it’s the middle of the night. Is everything alright?”
“I can’t sleep, because I’ve been thinking of how to ask Alex to the dance. Any ideas?” John asks, stifling a yawn.
Laff says and replies, “Hang on, let me add Herc to the line.”
The phone rings five or six times before he picks up. “You just woke me up, so this better be good.”
“I need help asking Alex to the dance,” John repeats.
After a few seconds of silence, Hercules replies, “Fair enough. What do you have so far?”
“Um… I want to go on a cute date first, and then ask him. That’s all I got.”
“Hmm… cute date,” Laff repeats. “Maybe… dinner? Or… you could watch something on Broadway? Maybe go to the park?”
“Oooh, I like the idea of Broadway! But what should we go see?” John asks.
Herc replies, “Hang on, let me see what there is.” There’s the sound of keyboard keys clicking before he says, “Okay, there’s Wicked, The Lion King, The Phantom of the Opera and… OH MY GOSH!!!”
“What?” John asks.
“What is it?” Laff adds.
“You guys…” Hercules takes a deep breath. “You know how Alex is named after that founding father guy, Alexander Hamilton?”
“Yeah…” John replies, curious as to what Herc’s found.
“Well, turns out, wait, let me double check… yeah, there’s a musical based on the founding father guy! Written by someone named… I think I’m pronouncing this right? …Lin-Manuel Miranda? Apparently it’s really popular. And it only came out in 2015! How have we never heard of it?”
John squeals loudly. He whisper shouts, “That’s perfect! I already have an idea forming in my head. Thanks, you guys!”
On Herc’s end, a muffled voice can be heard asking, “Herc? What are you doing?”
Hercules hangs up as Alex comes into the room, a blanket draped over his shoulders. Herc slams his computer closed and replies, “Oh, um, just, last minutes research for a project!”
Alexander cocks his head slightly and asks, “They why did you slam your computer closed?”
“Uhhh… Well, time to go to bed! Goodnight!” Herc quickly gets into bed. Suspicious, Alex heads back to his room. Maybe he was talking to Laff? Well, whatever it was, he didn’t want me to know.
The next day, John asks his parents about going to see the musical. After some talking, they agree, and set it up for February ninth, which is that Saturday. John thanks his parents and heads out to the bus.
He runs up to his boyfriend and exclaims, “Alex!”
Alexander turns around and smiles at him. “Hey John!”
“Don’t make any plans for Saturday, because we have a date,” John tells him, a smile playing across his lips.
“Where are we going?” he asks.
John leans in and whispers, “It’s a surprise.”
